Hi,

I am a Dare owner, and in March I'm eligable for an upgrade and am seriously considering the Choco-Touch.

I love my Dare, but it has a few limitations that I'm hoping the Touch doesn't.
That's why I'm here, to learn more about the Touch and see what it's all about.

I am not sure where to post this, so I'll just put it here, and if someone wants me to move it I will.

These are my problems with the Dare that I hope the Touch doesn't have.

1. You are limited to putting 2000 mp3's on the Dare, no matter how big of a MicroSDHC card you have. (I have a 16Gb card, and so I would be able to put way more than 2000 songs on the phone if not for the limit.

2. The Dare has some issues handing and sorting mp3's by their id3 tags. For example, all of my music has a genre, and it iTunes I can search by genre, but on the Dare if I search by genre, it basically says that all my songs are in the "NONE" genre, which is wrong. I've even converted my id3 tags to version 1.0 because I was told that the Dare could handle that better, but it didn't help.

3. On the Dare if you are in the middle of an audiobook or even a playlist or whatever, and you shutdown the media player, and then open it later, it does not pick up where you left off.

Does anyone know if the Chocolate Touch has these same issue or not?

I will search the forum, but for some reason this forum takes a million years to load each page on my computer. No other site is slow, just this one. I'm not sure why. But it's gonna take me a while at this rate to search the forum. But I'll try.

Thanks!

I love the looks of the Touch, and I am a musician so I love the drums and keyboard thing even if it's only a novelty. This phone looks more geared toward music than the Dare, and so I have high hopes that it will perform better in that area.

Welcome to the forum. I will try to answer your questions:

1. Not sure about this one as I only have around 650 to 700 songs.

2. There doesn't seem to be an issue with sorting according to genres. I just checked mine and it has quite a few genres and songs in each.

3. Bad news on this one; it doesn't seem to support bookmarking.

Coming from a Moto Krave, there are things I miss but also things that the CT does better. I couldn't play songs over my car stereo via an adapter or aux in cable. I can with the CT (watched and listened to a movie over my car stereo the other day). The touchscreen is different from the Krave, but after learning how to use it, it is actually more responsive. All in all, it is a good choice from the current VZ lineup. BUT...it does now require a minimum $9.99 data package per month. If that is not a problem, I would say go for it.

3) If you exit the player, when you return to the My Music screen, there is a circle with and "R" and a music note in the upper right corner, this will resume exactly where you left off.

slim6596:
Thanks for the help.
I had heard that the CT handles mp3 tags better, and you confirmed it, so that helps.
I do already have a data plan, so that wouldn't matter.

I had the Krave for a while too. That had the potential to be an awesome phone, but texting was a bit of a chore on it, which is why I returned it. I am very happy with my Dare, but I really do want my phone to be a great mp3 player, and I think maybe the CT does a better job at that than the Dare. Other than that, I think the CT and Dare are very similar phones.

Daren Rogers:
Thanks for the info. I tried that just now on my Dare, and I saw no "R" so I guess that is just a CT thing.

So now, all I really need to find out is does the CT have the same 2000 song limit as the Dare.

And one other issue, one review (www.phonearena.com) was saying that the CT has a poor touchscreen, and even the virtual qwerty was totally uselss, because the touchscreen was so unresponsive.
I have heard other people criticize the Dare for the same reasons, and I absolutely love the Dare's touchscreen, so I am a little suspicious of phonearena's review. It seems they were really hoping the CT was gonna be a Verizon version of the LG BL-40 and since it wasn't they were totally disappointed. They even said it was ugly. And that is just ridiculous. The CT is about the slimmest, coolest looking phone I've ever seen. The iPhone looks like a boring rectangle next to the CT in my opinion.

Anyway, is there any truth to that comment about the touchscreen?
I would imagine it has the same touchscreen as the Dare and the Env-Touch. But I could be wrong.

I would love to hear someone who has used both, compare the Dare's touchscreen to the CT.

Thanks again!

I know there was a bit of a learning curve with the CT touchscreen. It seemed softer than the Krave's and less responsive. But after I found out that it is resistive not capacitive, it is actually better than the Krave. All I need to do is touch it with a fingernail and it responds. I have used the blunt tip of an inkpen as a stylus to enter appointments into the calendar. To me, it seems pretty accurate.

By the way, it does work with the LG Outlook Sync add on for MS Outlook.

Can you clarify your "resistive, not capacitative" comment?  I take it phones like the iPhone use capacitative touch screens and that's why the CT touch screen feels different?

I googled them and I think I might understand.  Because it's resistive, it's sensitive to pressure rather than the actual touch of the finger (and thus the change in capacitance) -- which is why fingernails work so well?

Right. You've got it. With resistive, it takes more pressure on the screen to recognize it.

The downside to capacitive, is that you must use a finger only. Styluses or fingernails will not work at all on an iPhone. But the upside is it's more sensitive.

But with a good resistive screen, it really isn't that much less sensitive than a capacitive.

Let me put it like this, expect great lag from 2000 songs.  I have a 30 second load time at 1200.

Do you mean when you are opening the media player?
Because with 2000 songs, I don't have anywhere near 30 seconds lag. Maybe 5 seconds.

And once it is opened up, it runs pretty smoothly, with very little lag.

But to me, having lots of songs shouldn't affect the phone at all unless you are in the media player.

Once it reads your music library, it plays with no lag. But at first use (when you tap the music icon), there is a bit of lag as it loads the music.

Well, I am finally upgrading. I ordered my CT yesterday. My wife is going to use my Dare when the CT gets here. I am actually using her upgrade. It's nice to have a wife who has no interest at all in having the latest greatest phones. I get new every 1 instead of new every 2, since we have two phones in our account. Smiley

Anyway, I think the CT is going to be perfect for me. I've even rigged up my car to where I can just plug one wire into the phone, and it puts the audio into my car stereo, and there is also a microphone on my visor that is hooked up as well. So I can be listening to music on my stereo from my phone, and if someone calls, I can just hit answer and start talking. I'm pretty sure it will work with the CT also. I know it works great with my Dare and even with my friend's iPhone. So I can't wait to play drums through my car stereo with some songs. lol I am a drummer anyway, and a guitarist and a keyboardist. Smiley  So this phone definitely seems like a musician's phone.

It's supposed to arrive at the house monday. I can't wait!

Arrived Monday. Been playing with my new CT for a couple of days now.
Absolutely love it! I loved my Dare but there were a few annoying problems with it, and some things that I wished had been designed a little better. And the CT has improved every one of those things.

1. The camera takes forever to startup on the Dare. Pretty quick on the CT.
2. The media player does not remember where you left off when you come back to it on the Dare. The CT does.
3. There is a 2000 song limit on the Dare for some reason I can't imagine why.
Halelluiah! I just added one song to my 16Gb card on my CT and it added it in the media player, so apparently the CT does not have this arbitrary 2000 song limit. YEAH!!
4. The touch screen on the Dare is descent but could be more sensitive. The touch screen on the CT is much more responsive in my opinion.
5. The CT is thinner.
6. The screen unlock slide is not only cooler looking on the CT, but less likely to accidentally get unlocked in your pocket.
7. I think the camera (even though it lacks a flash) takes better pictures in fully automatic mode on the CT than on the Dare. My pics were always blurry on the Dare unless I held it extremely still while taking the picture.
8. The drums and keyboard apps doesn't hurt either, since I am a musician and have a blast playing with those. Not that I wouldn't have a blast with them even if I wasn't a musician. Smiley

I'm sure there is more, and I'll probably notice more as I continue to use this phone. But so far I am extremely impressed. This is the first phone I've ever bought that I didn't try it out in the store first. Just from what I read online and in this forum, I knew it was the phone for me. And I am not disappointed at all.

What kind of customization are you talking about?
I have edited all the settings  and menus to my liking, and changed my wallpaper, and added a ton of songs and stuff to my card. Even downloaded a game, and VZ-Nav and Mobile Email.

Is this forum extremely slow for anyone besides me?
I literally click on something on this forum, then have to go do something else while it loads up. When I clicked "reply" to your quote it probably took about 2 or 3 minutes before the reply box came up. I am at work and we have a T1-LAN. And I talk on other forums and none of them are slow. The Dare forum is slow to load initially, but once you are in, you can go through different topics in the forum quickly. But this forum, just every time you click anything it takes forever. It makes searching and even posting a chore, which is too bad.

I'm not sure why this forum would take so long to load. I just clicked reply and it loaded in about 10 seconds. Weird...
I was referring to additional customization, but then realized that not everyone may be comfortable with using Bitpim and getting into the system files on their phone.
Using Bitpim, I have replaced the first two animations in the wallpaper folder with "flash clocks", meaning clock wallpaper that is Flash based. It has a background and a clock that pulls time data from the onboard settings (does NOT use data over the network). If you Google "LG Dare flash clocks", you should find examples of what I am talking about.
