My son has been pulling his hair out trying to figure out how to add music to his Choc Touch phone. He wants to add mp3's from his collection directly to the phone without using any syncing programs. Is this possible in USB Mass storage mode?

Yes.  You have to have a micro-SD card in the phone, then enter Tools -> USB Mass Storage mode.  Your system (Windows) should now see a new drive.  Copy the music files under the my_music folder on the new drive (sub-folders are fine), and you are ready to rock!

I've been listening to music ripped from a Shoutcast station, so I don't have proper mp3 tags on mine.  I'm not sure if the phone handles things like album art properly if you copy the mp3's vs. syncing with Windows Media Player or similar.  You might get better results by syncing, but copying the mp3's works fine.

Gary is correct--you can drag and drop mp3s directly to your my_music folder on your memory card without taking it out of the phone. The only thing is, it will not transfer the album art...UNLESS you have tagged and embedded the album art directly into the mp3 file. You can do this with mp3Tag. It is a freeware program that is specifically for tagging your music files. After the art is saved to the mp3, it does not matter how you transfer the file from computer to mobile device--your album art will be there. The only thing is, it takes a while to do. It is not automatic and can get tedious if you have a large music collection but I think it is worth the time spent.
